Why this WorldPride is different—and the time to book is NOW

WorldPride in D.C. is shaping up, with some iconic performances just announced from Kim Petras, Troye Sivan, Jennifer Lopez, and more — and pre-sale tickets are going fast.
Why this year is different: If you’re able to attend, it’s becoming increasingly clear that this year is different—it’s incredibly important that we show up and show out in huge numbers. Donald Trump and his Republican Party have taken direct aim at our community:
He’s specifically targeting the human rights of Trans people (which the New York Times editorial board recently slammed in a surprising but welcome condemnation)
He’s continuing to demonize drag performers
He’s trying to remove Trans people from Stonewall’s legacy
He’s even canceled a Pride performance by the Gay Men’s Chorus at the Kennedy Center (D.C.’s main performing arts venue)
And there’s widespread fear that marriage equality is next on the chopping block
We know the constant deluge of news can be exhausting, but this makes it easier: stay in the know with one of our favorite news sources out there
Trump’s neofascist movement has given this WorldPride—right on his doorstep—a new urgency.
The details: WorldPride officially runs May 17 through June 8, but things really get going with an opening concert with Shakira on Saturday, May 31. Other highlights include the WorldPride Music Festival June 6-7, the Pride parade on June 7, and a massive, international march that ends at the step of the U.S. capitol on June 8.
NOW is the time to book: Hotels are already filling up fast—so if you’re planning a trip to D.C., now is the time to book. Expect to pay $200-$300 a night for a centrally located hotel. (But even if you’re not centrally located, D.C.’s metro is great.)
Bonus: There will be a lot going on in D.C. for WorldPride, and as PinkNews points out, there’s so much more to the Capital Region.
