Tacos, Tequila, and Trade: CDMX Is Calling 🇲🇽

Mexico City is heating up as one of Latin America's most exciting LGBTQ+ destinations, especially as we head into spring when the jacaranda trees bloom purple across the city and before the summer rainy season begins.
The sprawling metropolis combines rich cultural heritage with a progressive attitude toward the LGBTQ+ community, making it an ideal getaway for travelers seeking both history and contemporary queer culture.
Plus: tacos so good they’ll ruin you for life.
The Zona Rosa neighborhood serves as Mexico City's main gayborhood, with dozens of LGBTQ+ venues concentrated around Amberes Street. The city’s Roma and Condesa neighborhoods are bursting with gay-owned restaurants and boutiques—and the nightlife? Iconic.
One night you’re sipping cocktails in a candlelit courtyard, the next you’re dancing till sunrise at La Purísima or Kinky. And it’s all ridiculously affordable.
The city also hosts its massive Pride celebration (Marcha del Orgullo LGBTTTI) in late June, drawing over a quarter million participants for a colorful parade that winds through the Paseo de la Reforma. For film buffs, the MIX México LGBTQ+ Film Festival in June showcases diverse queer cinema from around the world.
What to See & Do:
Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul) - Visit the iconic blue house where the bisexual artist lived and worked in Coyoacán ($15 USD entrance, book tickets online in advance!)
Zona Rosa - Explore the heart of gay Mexico City, particularly Amberes Street with bars like Kinky Bar and La Púrpura
Xochimilco Canals - Rent a colorful trajinera boat for a floating party with friends (about $25/hour for the entire boat)
Take a cooking class - We did this one and it was a GREAT experience with a professional (and hilarious) chef
Chapultepec Park - Wander through one of the world's largest urban parks and visit the impressive Anthropology Museum
Roma and Condesa neighborhoods - Stroll through these trendy districts filled with art deco architecture, hip cafés, and LGBTQ+-friendly establishments
Lucha Libre at Arena México - Experience the theatrical Mexican wrestling on Tuesday or Friday nights ($15-30 USD for good seats)
Zócalo and Historic Center - Explore the massive main square, Metropolitan Cathedral, and nearby Templo Mayor ruins
Tom's Leather Bar - Check out this popular spot in Zona Rosa for the city's leather and bear community
Sodome - the best bath house in town (and the most tourist friendly)
When it comes to dining, don't miss Contramar in Roma Norte for upscale seafood in a stylish setting (their one fish dish is so famous the New York Times did a whole piece about it), or Páramo for creative Mexican cuisine and craft cocktails in a hip atmosphere. Quintonil was ranked as one of the best restaurants in the world. For authentic street food, Mercado Roma food hall offers everything from traditional tacos to gourmet treats. Don’t miss the esquites—or Dorilocos, ‘salads’ piled inside a full bag of Doritos.
For accommodations, there are no exclusively Gay hotels in CDMX. But there are plenty of friendly options. Patio 77 is a small boutique hotel inside a restored colonial townhouse, around $100/night. For something more upscale, Hotel Carlota in Juárez features contemporary design and a glass-walled pool with rooms from $150/night. Also check out Amberes 64, a 4-star hotel with a classic homely feel to the rooms. If you're on a budget, Hostal Centro Histórico Regina offers private rooms from $40/night in a perfect location for exploring the historic center.

Q&A Time:
Last week we asked, what's your preferred gay beach attire? Here are the results:

“Wear anything revealing, very revealing!”
“Comfortable trunks with a fun print. Life's too short for boring swimwear!”
“These days we are shirts with our shorts to relax so as to not spoil the view for everyone”
“I assess the situation once I arrive.”
“The real answer is sunscreen. Lots and lots of sunscreen. Everything else is secondary!”
