5 Underrated Destinations for LGBTQ+ Travelers
Looking for a vacation off the beaten path? Here are five of our favorite cities (and towns!) that are often overlooked as LGBTQ+ destinations, perfect for a getaway thatās not overflowing with touristsāand major plus-you can get great photos for your Instagram!
1. Montreal, Canada
Nestled along the St. Lawrence River in Quebec, Canadaās second biggest city stands out as a gem for LGBTQ travelers seeking a blend of culture, history, and inclusivity. Often overlooked for Toronto, Montreal brings the charm of Europe to North Americaāitās the largest French-speaking city in the western hemisphere. At the heart of Montreal's LGBTQ scene lies the iconic Gay Village, a colorful neighborhood bursting with LGBTQ-owned businesses, lively bars, and eclectic restaurants. Explore unique spots like Cabaret Mado for unforgettable drag performances or have a drink at Bar Le Cocktail, where the party goes well into the morning. Montreal also hosts one of the largest LGBTQ festivals in the world, the Montreal Pride Parade in August, drawing crowds from all corners of the globe. Donāt forget to climb Mount Royal for stunning views of the city.
2. Santa Fe, New Mexico
Often overlooked for bigger cities on the coasts, the oldest state capital in America offers southwestern charm on a friendly, intimate scale. Itās also a haven for older LGBTQ-folk, and with its rich history of art and nature, itās the perfect place to visit. The city's historic Plaza area serves as a focal point for exploration, surrounded by adobe buildings housing galleries, boutiques, and cafes. Immerse yourself in the city's rich artistic heritage by visiting renowned galleries such as the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum or explore the vibrant art scene in the Railyard Arts District. For those seeking relaxation, Santa Fe's tranquil landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for hiking, biking, or simply taking in the breathtaking views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Or during the winter months, go skiing at nearby Taos. Itās the perfect relaxing getaway.
3. Osaka, Japan
Japan's third-largest city beckons with a mosaic of flavors and an ethos of acceptance, inviting exploration of its vibrant neighborhoods, from the dazzling lights of Dotonbori to the eclectic streets of Amerikamura. Bask in the warmth of Osaka's open-minded community while savoring its diverse culinary landscape, which is celebrated by many as the ākitchen of Japan.ā Moreover, safety is paramount: Japan consistently ranks among the safest Asian countries for LGBTQ+ travelers. The beating heart of Osaka's LGBTQ+ scene thrives in the Doyama district, a welcoming enclave of bars, clubs, and cafes catering to the community's diverse tastes. Itās an off-the-beaten path destination for travelers who may want a more authentically Japanese, and less touristy, vacation. Check out our full guide.
4. Hvar, Croatia
This jewel along the Croatian coast is an easy boat ride from Split or Dubrovnik and offers an amazing jumping off point to visit other, breathtaking islands in the Adriatic Sea. Itās less touristy, less crowded, and less expensive than other island trips in the Mediterranean (Iām looking at you, Greece), making it the perfect palace for a more authentic and budget friendly trip. In the summer, it also becomes a gay hotspot, popular with tourists and locals alike. Hvar isn't a big city, so thereās no āgay district,ā but many bars are gay friendly. And, just a five minute boat ride from town is Jerolim Island, a rocky island with a nude beach (and gay section) thatās been named as one of the best in the world.
5. MedellĆn, Colombia
Colombia's second-largest city sits a mile high in the Andes, and boasts a vibrant LGBTQIA+ community that's open and visible. Zona Rosa, the lively gay nightlife hub, is nestled within the chic El Poblado neighborhood, renowned for its trendy cafes, upscale shopping, and stylish hotels. Don't miss the Museum of Antioquia, showcasing a remarkable collection by acclaimed artist Fernando Botero. Once marred by violence, MedellĆn has transformed into a safe and thriving metropolis, offering guided tours, including Pablo Escobar Tours, providing insight into its tumultuous past. During Pride weekend in late June and early July, the city erupts with colorful celebrations, featuring parades, music, and joyous festivities.
Q&A Time:
Last week we asked, do you check your bags, or only do carry-on? The results were fairly split:
Doug only does carry-on: āI like to walk off my plane and just be on my way and not have to wait in the baggage claim area. Plus, I like to travel light.ā
Eboni checks the bags: āThere is nothing I hate more than lugging bags through the airport. I want to check my bag and have free hands!ā
Anthony wonāt pay: āI refuse to pay more for something they used to - and still should - provide as part of the already expensive ticket!ā
This week, we want to know: Would you rather take a plane, a train, or drive? You can tell us your thoughts after submitting your vote.
Which do you prefer taking? |
