Los Angeles: Your Pre-Olympics Gay Travel Guide

No, this Olympics promo is not real (but it should be)

Hop off the plane at LAX — the new home of the Olympic flame 🔥👀

With the Paris Olympics in the history books, the Olympic flag has officially been passed to Los Angeles, where the 2028 Games will light up the city. Paris has been called the Gayest Olympics Ever — but we’re confident LA is going to break that record. But don't wait until then to experience all that LA has to offer! Let’s dive right in, shall we?

Neighborhoods to Explore

  • West Hollywood (WeHo): The epicenter of gay life in LA, WeHo is the place to start your journey. Rainbow crosswalks, iconic clubs like The Abbey, gay owned-and-operated shops, and trendy bars line Santa Monica Boulevard. During Pride (and Halloween!), this area transforms into a massive street party, but any night of the week, you'll find someone ready to party.

  • Silver Lake: For those who prefer a more laid-back, artsy vibe, Silver Lake is the gay-friendly neighborhood of choice. It's home to some of LA’s coolest bars (including LA’s Eagle), coffee shops, and indie boutiques. The community here is diverse, creative, and always up for something new.

  • Downtown LA (DTLA): The revitalized downtown area is buzzing with energy and LGBTQ+ inclusivity. From chic rooftop bars to underground clubs, DTLA offers a more urban experience. Don’t miss Redline, a popular gay bar right in the heart of downtown.

  • Venice Beach: Head west to Venice for a more eclectic scene. The boardwalk is full of colorful characters, and Muscle Beach is an iconic spot for both fitness buffs and curious onlookers. The LGBTQ+ community here is vibrant, and Venice is also known for its strong artistic presence.

Nightlife

  • The Abbey: The Abbey is more than just a bar; it’s an institution. With its stunning décor, delicious cocktails, and welcoming atmosphere, there’s no wonder it’s often referred to as the best gay bar in the world.

  • Akbar: Located in Silver Lake, Akbar offers a more relaxed atmosphere with strong drinks, a diverse crowd, and great music. It’s a favorite among locals for good reason.

  • Precinct: For those who love drag shows and dancing, Precinct in DTLA is a must-visit. It’s a large space with multiple levels, and it always has something exciting going on.

  • The LA Eagle: The iconic leather bar located in the heart of Silver Lake, known for its inclusive and welcoming atmosphere. A rugged yet friendly vibe, complete with themed nights, DJ sets, and events that celebrate the leather and fetish community. And a great patio.

Events and Festivals

  • LA Pride: Typically held in June, LA Pride in West Hollywood is one of the biggest Pride events in the world. Expect parades, concerts, and a festival that attracts tens of thousands of visitors.

  • Outfest: LA’s premiere LGBTQ+ film festival, Outfest showcases the best in Queer cinema. Whether you're a film buff or just looking for a unique cultural experience, Outfest is a must-see.

  • Halloween Carnaval: West Hollywood’s Halloween Carnaval is the world’s largest Halloween street party. With elaborate costumes, themed events, and a crowd that knows how to celebrate, it’s a night you won’t forget.

Where to Stay

  • The Standard, West Hollywood: Known for its iconic rooftop pool and a hip, youthful vibe, The Standard is a great place to stay if you want to be right in the heart of the action.

  • Kimpton La Peer Hotel: Located in the Design District, this boutique hotel is LGBTQ+ friendly and offers a luxurious stay with a focus on art and design.

  • Chateau Marmont: For a taste of old Hollywood glamour, this legendary hotel is not only a piece of history but also a favorite among LGBTQ+ travelers looking for a unique and upscale experience.

Must-See Attractions

  • Griffith Observatory & Park: Offering stunning views of the city and the iconic Hollywood Sign, Griffith Park is perfect for hiking and picnicking. The observatory itself is a fascinating experience for those interested in astronomy.

  • Getty Center: Art lovers should make a stop at the Getty Center. The museum's impressive collection and breathtaking gardens are complemented by panoramic views of LA.

  • Santa Monica Pier: A classic LA experience, the Santa Monica Pier is great for a day out by the ocean. It’s also a short trip from Venice Beach, making it easy to explore both in one day.

  • Ginger Rogers Beach: Nestled along the Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica, this beacj is hidden gem for the LGBTQ+ community. Known for its relaxed vibe and stunning ocean views, it's a popular spot for sunbathing and socializing away from the more crowded beaches.

Foodie Favorites

  • Gracias Madre: A plant-based Mexican restaurant in West Hollywood that’s not only delicious but also ethically focused. Their margaritas are a must-try!

  • Crossroads Kitchen: Celebrity chef Tal Ronnen’s vegan hotspot in WeHo is perfect for a stylish dinner out. Even non-vegans rave about the food here.

  • The Little Door: A romantic spot in West Hollywood, The Little Door offers Mediterranean-inspired cuisine in an intimate setting. It’s a great choice for a date night.

If you’ve never been, now’s the time. LA truly welcomes the LGBTQ+ community with open arms. And with the Olympics on the horizon, the city is more electric than ever. So, pack your bags and discover why LA is one of the most exciting gay destinations in the world!

Q&A Time:

Apparently, you’ve got to get to Mount Rushmore! Some other underrated spots: Guatemala, Rehoboth Beach, Boise, the Oregon coast, and Invercargill in New Zealand“a sleepy little town at the bottom of the world - nothing to see or do but just lovely in an odd way.”
