The 11 GAYEST Christmas Markets in the World

Mulled wine, drag queens and a guy in a Santa hat who is definitely on Grindr. Welcome to Christmas market season, gay edition.

Europe does Christmas markets better than anyone, and a handful of cities have gone one step further and built markets by and for the gays: pink lights, Schlager singalongs, drag bingo, bears in ugly sweaters. The rest of this list is big, beautiful markets in queer-friendly cities, each a short walk from a gay bar where you can thaw out. We’re also sneaking two stateside queer holiday markets in at the end, because the US has some good ones too.

The markets open mid-to-late November, so now’s the time to book flights and hotels (Christmas-market weekends in Germany fill up FAST). Let’s get into it.

1. Heavenue โ€” Cologne, Germany

Cologne is Germany’s gay capital, so of course its gay Christmas market comes with an XXL Glรผhwein palace, a 10-metre fountain with a light show and a rotating Christmas tree. Heavenue is run by the team behind the Sexy Cologne parties, and it came back in 2025 after a three-year break at a new home on Friesenplatz.

What makes it gay: A stage with drag, DJs and live acts, plus the Heaven & Hell Glรผhweinhaus, which does drag brunch and bingo nights. Pastel huts sell gifts and crafts (and you will buy a glittery ornament you don’t need).

2026 dates: Nov 16 โ€“ Dec 23, at Friesenplatz (corner of Limburger StraรŸe). Open from mid-afternoon until 22:00, and until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Closed Sun Nov 22.

Nearby: The SchaafenstraรŸe gay strip is 7โ€“10 minutes’ walk via Rudolfplatz (or one stop on tram 12 or 15). Hit Excorner (SchaafenstraรŸe 57โ€“59) for pop and Schlager, Die Mumu (no. 51) for pink walls and Tuesday karaoke, and Exile (no. 61A) for “Bitchy Bingo.”

Where to stay: Hotel Chelsea in the Belgian Quarter, or the Lindner Hotel City Plaza right by Friesenplatz. Kayak has been showing rates from around $90โ€“100 a night at both; expect more on market weekends.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Pro tip: Go the weekend of Nov 27โ€“29 and you also get Sexy Cologne Christmas: St. Nicholas Edition, a weekend of four parties including the main one at Bootshaus. Your liver has been warned.

2. Pink Christmas โ€” Munich, Germany

Pink lanterns and a crowd at the Pink Christmas market on Stephansplatz in Munich

The OG. The queer community started Pink Christmas on Stephansplatz in the Glockenbachviertel back in 2005, and 2026 is its 21st edition. Think pagoda tents, pink-lit trees, Glรผhwein, bratwurst and a whole lot of Schlager.

What makes it gay: DJ James Munich plays every day from 18:00, there are evening Schlager and drag shows in the run-up to Christmas, and “Show Sunday” with Gene Pascale starts at 19:00. There’s a Prosecco bar for after the shows (obviously). On Dec 1, World AIDS Day, there’s an evening event with donations to Mรผnchner Aids-Hilfe.

2026 dates: Nov 20 โ€“ Dec 20. Monday to Friday 16:00โ€“22:00, weekends 14:00โ€“22:00.

Nearby: You’re already in the gayborhood. Cafรฉ Nil (Hans-Sachs-StraรŸe 2) is the neighborhood living room, with schnitzel, cake and an older crowd. Ochsengarten (MรผllerstraรŸe 47) opened in 1967 as Germany’s first leather bar (and no, it hasn’t gone soft).

Where to stay: Hotel Deutsche Eiche (ReichenbachstraรŸe 13), the city’s famous gay hotel, with what Munich’s tourism board calls Germany’s biggest men’s sauna. Kayak lists rates from around $120 a night.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Pro tip: Take the U-Bahn to Sendlinger Tor and walk. Parking in the Glockenbachviertel is scarce and expensive (we’ve been to Munich, and the U-Bahn is your friend).

3. Christmas Avenue โ€” Berlin, Germany

Berlin’s queer market sits under the elevated U-Bahn tracks at Nollendorfplatz, the heart of gay Schรถneberg. It runs in two acts: the LGBTQIA* Winterdays first, then Christmas Avenue.

What makes it gay: Drag bingo with Margot Schlรถnzke, a Monday happy hour, Thursday after-work parties, “Holy Aperoli” Sundays (yes, Aperol in winter) and DJs from Berlin’s queer club scene. Community groups have stalls too.

2026 dates: Winterdays Nov 4โ€“22 (closed Nov 15 and 22), Christmas Avenue Nov 23 โ€“ Dec 23. Monday to Thursday 16:00โ€“22:00, Friday to Sunday 15:00โ€“22:00. Free entry, 16+ only.

Nearby: Heile Welt (MotzstraรŸe 5) is the cozy lounge where the night starts, open daily from 20:00. WOOF (FuggerstraรŸe 37) is for bears, chubs and admirers, with 2-for-1 drinks on Tuesdays. The Schwules Museum is about 10 minutes away if you want some culture between Glรผhweins.

Where to stay: Axel Hotel Berlin (Lietzenburger StraรŸe 13โ€“15), the adults-only gay hotel in the middle of the scene. Kayak has shown rates from about $70 a night, with averages around $100 in the cheaper winter months.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Pro tip: Take the U1, U2, U3 or U4 to Nollendorfplatz. You’ll come up the stairs and straight into the Glรผhwein.

4. Winter Pride โ€” Hamburg, Germany

Northern Germany’s biggest LGBTQ+ Christmas market is in St. Georg, Hamburg’s gay neighborhood, a few steps from the main train station. Rainbow lights, Lebkuchen, Spekulatius and zero traditional Christmas music. Iconic.

What makes it gay: Local DJs spin pop, Schlager, indie and electro on Friday and Saturday nights from 19:00. On weeknights, local LGBTQ+ community groups run the stall. Coming with a crew? There are three huts you can rent for groups of 10โ€“40.

2026 dates: Nov 18 โ€“ Dec 23 (closed Nov 22), at Lange Reihe / corner of Kirchenallee. From early afternoon until 22:00, and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Nearby: Walk up Lange Reihe. M&V Bar (Lange Reihe 22) has been going since 1953, with ten kinds of gin and a 30โ€“50 crowd who actually want to talk. Cafรฉ Gnosa (Lange Reihe 93) is the queer cafรฉ for coffee and cake before the Glรผhwein starts.

Where to stay: Holiday Inn โ€“ the niu, Fusion Hamburg St. Georg (Steindamm 68โ€“70), the budget pick closest to the gay venues. December is its priciest month, averaging around โ‚ฌ150 a night on Kayak.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Pro tip: Book the Pulverfass Cabaret drag Christmas show, Santa’s Pink Secret (tickets from about โ‚ฌ56), for one of your nights. It’s in St. Pauli, a short U-Bahn ride away.

5. Rosa Weihnacht โ€” Frankfurt, Germany

Frankfurt’s main Christmas market is huge and very traditional. Then there’s the corner of it that glows pink. Rosa Weihnacht (“Pink Christmas”) takes over Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz near the Hauptwache, by St. Catherine’s Church, and you can spot it from a block away.

What makes it gay: Gay- and lesbian-run stalls, pink Christmas trees and brandy punch served from a four-metre cauldron (a very normal amount of punch).

2026 dates: Nov 23 โ€“ Dec 22. It’s part of the official Frankfurt Christmas Market, which runs Monday to Saturday 10:00โ€“21:00 and Sunday 11:00โ€“21:00.

Nearby: The “Bermuda Triangle” around Alte Gasse is about 10 minutes’ walk north. Switchboard (Alte Gasse 36) is the volunteer-run cafรฉ-bar of AIDS-Hilfe Frankfurt, around since 1988, with a real community feel and cheap drinks. Bar Central (Elefantengasse 11โ€“13) is the stylish cocktail lounge, with jazz on Sundays.

Where to stay: Motel One Frankfurt-Rรถmer (Berliner StraรŸe 55), between the market and Alte Gasse. Kayak shows rates from about $90 a night, but December is its most expensive month.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Pro tip: Frankfurt’s official Glรผhwein mug is a collectible. Buy one for โ‚ฌ4 at any Glรผhwein stand or the Rรถmer tourist office instead of swiping it (we see you).

6. Christkindlmarkt am Rathausplatz โ€” Vienna, Austria

Full honesty: Vienna doesn’t have a dedicated queer Christmas market. It makes the list anyway, because its markets are some of the most beautiful in Europe and the gay bars are a short walk away. The big one is in front of City Hall, with an ice rink that stays open into January.

What makes it gay: The after-party. The Mariahilf and Naschmarkt area has the city’s best queer bars, about 10 minutes from the smaller, cuter Spittelberg market. Start at Spittelberg, end on the dance floor.

2026 dates: Rathausplatz runs Nov 13 โ€“ Dec 26, daily 10:00โ€“22:00 (until 18:30 on Dec 24). The Eistraum ice rink stays open until Jan 6, 2027. Spittelberg runs mid-November to Dec 23.

Nearby: Mango Bar (Laimgrubengasse 3) has been the neighborhood party bar since 1981, open seven nights. Cafรฉ Savoy (Linke Wienzeile 36) is a grand old coffeehouse with mirrors and a chandelier, and it gets gayer as the evening goes on. Heads up: Felixx has closed for good.

Where to stay: Altstadt Vienna (Kirchengasse 41), a boutique hotel 2โ€“3 minutes from Spittelberg. It’s a splurge: December averages around โ‚ฌ430 a night on Kayak.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Pro tip: You pay a deposit on your punch mug: โ‚ฌ5 at Rathausplatz and โ‚ฌ2 at Spittelberg at last count. Return it or keep it as a souvenir. Take the U2 to Rathaus.

7. Winter Wonders โ€” Brussels, Belgium

Brussels’ Winter Wonders (Plaisirs d’Hiver) spreads through the city center: chalets from the Bourse to Place Sainte-Catherine, a Ferris wheel, and a sound-and-light show on the Grand-Place. The best part for us: the gay street is three minutes from the Bourse.

What makes it gay: Rue du Marchรฉ au Charbon, Brussels’ gay strip, is right in the middle of the market. Rainbow House Brussels is on the same street (no. 42).

2026 dates: Opens Fri Nov 27, 2026, and runs into early January 2027 (the official site lists both Jan 1 and Jan 3; check before you book). Daily 12:00โ€“22:00, closing at 18:00 on Dec 24 and Dec 31. Free entry.

Nearby: Le Belgica (Rue du Marchรฉ au Charbon 32) is the long-running favorite with cheap drinks and a glitter-ball dance floor (closed Monโ€“Tue). Le Baroque (no. 44) is for bears and friends, and so small that everyone drinks outside. Then Chez Maman (Rue des Grands Carmes 7), where the queens perform on the bar: Fridays and Saturdays from 21:30, โ‚ฌ10 entry, no reservations.

Where to stay: Hotel Cafรฉ Pacific (Rue Antoine Dansaert 57), a budget boutique hotel near the Grand-Place. Kayak shows about $85โ€“115 a night.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Pro tip: Weekend evenings get extremely crowded around the Bourse and Sainte-Catherine. Go on a weeknight and start with the Grand-Place light show.

8. Tivoli Gardens at Christmas โ€” Copenhagen, Denmark

Photo: Maria Eklind / CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Copenhagen’s historic amusement park turns into a Christmas village every winter, with a Christmas market, rides, ice skating, a Santa Train and enough twinkle lights to be seen from space (probably).

What makes it gay: Five to ten minutes’ walk from Tivoli is Centralhjรธrnet (Kattesundet 18), open since 1917 and Denmark’s oldest LGBTI+ bar. It spends around 100,000 DKK a year decorating for Christmas, the decorations go up on the last Sunday in October, and locals say Christmas doesn’t start until you’ve had a glรธgg there.

2026 dates: Nov 13, 2026 โ€“ Jan 3, 2027. Tickets start around 210 DKK for adults, and rides cost extra.

Nearby: After Centralhjรธrnet, try Jailhouse CPH (Studiestrรฆde 12), a prison-themed bar with “police” bartenders. Yes, it’s exactly what you think.

Where to stay: Hotel SP34 (Sankt Peders Strรฆde 34) in the Latin Quarter, two minutes from the gay bars. Kayak shows roughly $180โ€“300 a night.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Pro tip: Buy Tivoli tickets online and go on a weekday afternoon. It’s dark by about 16:00, so you get the lights without the after-work crowd.

9. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland โ€” London, UK

Photo: Garry Knight / CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Less “quaint German village,” more “Christmas theme park,” with a Christmas market, Ferris wheels and roughly a million mulled-wine stands. (We’ve been to London twice, most recently in September. It never gets old.)

What makes it gay: The night after. The Royal Vauxhall Tavern’s annual Christmas panto is a London queer institution, and this year’s show is PULLED, a King Arthur panto (we’ll let you work out the jokes). Shows are Nov 24 and 27, and Dec 5, 12, 27 and 31; tickets are ยฃ23โ€“25.

2026 dates: Nov 19, 2026 โ€“ Jan 3, 2027, closed Christmas Day. Mostly 10:00โ€“22:00.

Nearby: Soho is about 15โ€“20 minutes away on the Tube. Admiral Duncan (54 Old Compton St) is the classic gay pub, and Comptons of Soho (51โ€“53 Old Compton St) has been pouring pints since 1986. RIP G-A-Y Bar, which closed in October 2025.

Where to stay: Z Hotel Soho, steps from Old Compton Street, from about $155 a night (December will run higher).

๐Ÿ‘‰ Pro tip: Winter Wonderland entry is ticketed by arrival slot. Off-peak entry is free but still needs a ticket, standard is ยฃ5.50 and peak (evenings and weekends) is ยฃ8.25, so book ahead.

10: The Big Gay Holiday Market โ€” Madison, Wisconsin

Stateside bonus round. Quick heads-up: this one is an indoor queer maker market, not a twinkly outdoor village. Think rows of queer artists, drag and a Santa you can actually take a photo with.

What makes it gay: Everything. Last year’s edition had 80+ queer and ally vendors, drag bingo, a clothing swap and a Santa meet-and-greet. The organizers schedule it at the holidays on purpose, because the season can be lonely for queers who skip the family gathering, and the market doubles as a place to find your people.

2026 dates: Fri Dec 18, 5:00โ€“10:00pm (ticketed, 18+ only) and Sat Dec 19, 10:00amโ€“5:00pm, at the Alliant Energy Center, 1919 Alliant Energy Center Way. Last year it was $15 per person on Friday and $8 per car on Saturday, so check the market’s site for this year’s prices.

Nearby: Downtown has two classics a short walk apart: Shamrock Bar & Grille (117 W Main St), the all-ages dive bar a block from the Capitol with happy hour every day from 3 to 7pm, and Woof’s (114 King St), the small bear-leaning sports bar with cheap drinks and leather bingo brunch. For dancing and drag, FIVE Nightclub is farther out, so plan a ride. Heads up if you’re using an older guide: Plan B on Willy Street closed in 2019, so don’t send the Uber there.

Where to stay: Hotel Ruby Marie is an LGBTQ+-friendly B&B about five minutes’ walk from Capitol Square, which puts you close to the downtown bars. Check rates for your dates.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Pro tip: The market is at the Alliant Energy Center, not downtown, so plan your ride between the market and the bars. Friday is the 18+ night market; Saturday is the daytime one for everyone.

11: Big Gay Holiday Market โ€” Indianapolis, Indiana

Our second stateside pick is a two-day queer market with 100+ artists, makers and community groups, run by Indy Gay Market. Last year it was part of Indy Pride’s Frost Series.

What makes it gay: The whole vendor list. Think handmade goods, art, holiday decor, pride merch and community resource tables. It’s a way to support small queer businesses and meet the locals.

2026 dates: Sat Dec 5, 4:00โ€“8:00pm and Sun Dec 6, 1:00โ€“5:00pm, at The AMP at 16 Tech, 1220 Waterway Blvd. Admission was free last year.

Nearby: Mass Ave is Indy’s gay strip. Metro (707 Massachusetts Ave) has been around since New Year’s Eve 1990, Tini (717) is tiny with elite people-watching, and Greg’s (231 E 16th St) is the dancing and drag bar. Downtown Olly’s (822 N Illinois St) is the late-night mozzarella-stick stop.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Pro tip: Greg’s is cash only, and the drag show costs about $5 on top. Hit an ATM first.

Before you go

Dates and hours come from each market’s official site or city tourism page as of October 2026. Things change, so double-check before you book. Hotel prices for the European markets are what Kayak was showing this fall, not December quotes, and Christmas-market weekends push them up. Our number one tip: BOOK NOW.
